My husband and I have been together for thirty years. One of my most treasured memories is making love in the leaves and mossy ground high on the mountaintop above the Alvord Desert. We drove our trusty VW all the way up, and when it wouldn't start—a rare betrayal—we stayed put and made a memory instead. "Remember the Mountain Bed" by Wilco became our song. Every time I hear it, I'm right back there: his long dark hair, the scratch of his beard, the smell of his young hippy love.

This painting is a tribute to my lover, to all lovers—to music, devotion, and the moments that carry us back to who we've always been. As I painted, flowers spread their seeds across the canvas, giving themselves back to the earth—guided by lyrics from Woody Guthrie, sung by Billy Bragg and Wilco: "We can build a house where our flowers come to bloom." So I ask you—where is your mountain bed?
